Children of Blood and Bone brought its director and an extensive cast lineup to New York Comic Con on October 10. Essence’s event coverage documents Gina Prince-Bythewood alongside Thuso Mbedu, Amandla Stenberg, Damson Idris, Cynthia Erivo, Lashana Lynch, Tosin Cole and Chiwetel Ejiofor at the Javits Center.

The appearance places the adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s novel in front of an audience already invested in fantasy worlds and the choices involved in translating them. Paramount currently lists the film for a January 15, 2027 theatrical release.

Mbedu plays Zélie, whose story unfolds in Orïsha, a kingdom where magic and its suppression drive the conflict. That premise gives the film the outward scale of an adventure and a more intimate demand: the audience has to care about the person moving through it. Elaborate world-building only becomes dramatic when somebody has something to lose.

In an October 8 interview with ELLE, Prince-Bythewood discussed grounding the fantasy in a recognizable emotional and cultural reality. Her experience on The Old Guard and The Woman King gives the project a relevant filmmaking context, bringing action and character work into the same conversation. That is a useful lens for the adaptation, rather than a guarantee of its eventual reception.

The campaign also has a complication that coverage should acknowledge. Adeyemi publicly distanced herself from the adaptation in July, saying she would not watch or promote it, as UPI reported. Her position is part of the film’s public history. It does not justify guessing at private disagreements or treating promotional appearances as proof that those disagreements have been resolved.

For readers of the novel, that context may sit alongside questions about casting, characterization and which parts of the book survive the move to screen. For newcomers, the first task is simpler: understanding the world and finding a reason to follow Zélie through it. A successful adaptation has to make space for both audiences.

The Comic Con appearance gives the film another visible step toward release. The cast can introduce the world, and the campaign can explain its ambition. In January, the finished film will have to make Orïsha feel like somewhere worth entering—and its people worth staying with.
