Quentin Tarantino / Sacha Baron Cohen

Tarantino and Sacha Baron Cohen Take Their Next Act to the West End

Confirmed dates for The Popinjay Cavalier put two screen personalities inside a very different performance contract: a live audience, every night.

Quentin Tarantino’s first stage play is heading to London with Sacha Baron Cohen in the lead. The Popinjay Cavalier, written and directed by Tarantino, will begin previews at the Phoenix Theatre on February 23, 2027, ahead of a March 18 opening. Tickets went on general sale October 12, with the run currently booking through June 13.

The production is described as a swashbuckling comedy set in 1830s Europe, built around disguise and deception. That is a more specific proposition than the announcement’s celebrity pairing alone: a period adventure asking its leading performer to make theatrical artifice part of the entertainment.

For Tarantino, the change of medium creates an immediate point of interest. Film can direct attention through the cut, determine exactly what the viewer sees and build a performance from separate takes. A stage production establishes a different relationship with time. The scene unfolds in a shared room, and the performers have to sustain its movement there.

That does not mean theatre lacks its own tools for directing attention. Lighting, blocking, sound and the arrangement of bodies can all organize a moment. But the audience has greater freedom to choose where to look. For a writer-director, that changes how a confrontation, a joke or a delayed revelation can be constructed.

Baron Cohen’s casting makes the comic side of that experiment especially intriguing. Deception is built into the announced premise. Onstage, a disguise can work on two levels at once: another character may believe it while the audience enjoys knowing better. The pleasure depends on how confidently the production manages that gap in knowledge.

For now, these are possibilities opened by the announcement, not observations about a show that has already played. No casting headline can establish the rhythm of a live production before audiences have encountered it. The dates give the project a concrete shape; rehearsals and performances will have to supply the rest.

What makes The Popinjay Cavalier worth watching is the prospect of recognizable screen sensibilities adapting to a room they cannot edit afterward. The first audience will arrive in February. Until then, the most compelling detail is the simple fact of the experiment: Tarantino writing for the stage, with Baron Cohen there to perform it.
